Just a Note...

As I write on this blog I use the word Lock, Dreadlock and Locs interchangeably and in no certain order. All mean the same for me. Some do not like the term "dreadlock" because it indicates that there is something to be dreaded...and our hair is not that so I don't use this word as much.

However, a lot of people call locks dreadlocks. I am not offended by either way. I love my locks and do not feel negative about them. If this term offends you, I am sorry. I hope that you will still feel comfortable on this site.

How I Made a Lock Sock out of a Scarf to Cover My Dreads

Covering your locks at night is important to keep lint out and to keep them looking nice and neat. Since locks are becoming more and more popular these days companies are coming up with coverings to meet the need and take the old school bonnet to a new level.
So far, I have been using the same type of scarf or bonnet that I have used since back when I had a relaxer and when I had free strand natural hair. It has served me well. But my locks are growing and its time to update my regimen.

Not too long ago I started searching for a head covering that was more specific to locks. I searched the web and found a few options. I was considering placing an order, but my pocket book was like, no!

Sure, I could have placed an order but I just couldn't justify it. I am not used to spending very much for a head covering. I decided then that I would come up with an alternative.  Here is what I came up with:

I folded my scarf in half and measured to the desired length. ( For me this was about 15 inches folded in half, so 30 inches all together)

I have only been growing my locks for a little over 1 year so I wanted my sock to be shorter. You can make yours whatever size you need.

I sewed up both sides and left the top open. Then I made about a 1 inch hem around the top to insert a piece of elastic.

After inserting the elastic, I sewed it in place and then I closed the hem and that was it! I hand sewed this but next time I hope to use a sewing machine. I saw a little hand held sewing machine at Kmart that would be perfect for this project.

I love this! Even hand sewed it turned out really well. And the best thing is that it is custom made to fit my head. I hate anything too tight around my head. So making my own lock sock gave me control to assure comfort. And the best thing is the cost. I already had everything on hand except the elastic. And you can get a pack at Walmart for 97 cents. Can you dig it?! Yeeesss!
