Just a Note...

As I write on this blog I use the word Lock, Dreadlock and Locs interchangeably and in no certain order. All mean the same for me. Some do not like the term "dreadlock" because it indicates that there is something to be dreaded...and our hair is not that so I don't use this word as much.

However, a lot of people call locks dreadlocks. I am not offended by either way. I love my locks and do not feel negative about them. If this term offends you, I am sorry. I hope that you will still feel comfortable on this site.

Top 10 Oils to Use on Dreadlocks

My Favorite Oils to Mix
Typically, oil and water don't mix. But, for locks oil and water are the perfect combination. Using oil and water to groom your locks will help to keep them clean, moisturized, shiny and strong. Here is a list of the top 10 oils to use on dreadlocks:

10. JoJoba Oil- This oil is said to be closest to the natural sebum our scalp produces. This can make this oil good to protect the scalp and keep it from impurities.

9. Sweet Almond Oil- This oil can help to thicken hair by nourishing hair follicles and makes hair shiny.

8. Amla Oil- This oil can also be used to strengthen weak hair follicles and condition hair. It may be good to soothe a dry scalp and relieve dandruff.

7. Tea Tree Oil- This oil can be used as an anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory. After I shampoo my hair my scalp itches and burns at the top where I have had some thinning. After I apply a hair ointment with tea tree oil in it, my scalp feels better within in seconds. It immediately calms my scalp and I don't have that issue any longer. For me this is a must have oil.

6. Red Palm Oil-This is a new oil to me. I read about it on a hair group. I have read that it has a very strong smell but works really well to help with hair growth. I have never tried it. I am not sure that I will try it but I included it in this list because it may be helpful to you. It seems it can restore moisture to hair.

5. Jamaican Black Castor Oil- This is one of the most popular oils in not only the lock community but also the natural hair community as a whole. Its use and popularity is crossing race and hair texture barriers as well. This oil is most commonly used to promote hair growth. It is supposed to help restore hair edges and fill in bald spots. When I first started my locks I used this oil faithfully. I do believe it is a good oil for your scalp but not necessarily to moisturize your hair. When I used it more my hair still looked dry. I still use it but not as much as in the beginning.

4. Wild Growth Hair Oil-The name says it all. This oil has been around a long time. It is a secret mixture of oils and other ingredients that are supposed to promote hair growth. Back in the day, this oil smelled really strong and was almost not worth the benefits it promised. But, I think they have worked on the smell. I use this oil and it does not seem as strong as it used to be. Its bearable now. I believe it works well for hair growth. As I have mentioned, I have some thinning in the top of my hair. I started with the JBCO and I started to see some of my hair filling back in. I have changed over to using the Wild Growth Oil now and I am seeing more progress. Neither oil is magic. But, I believe they help. Growing long hair takes time and attention. Nothing happens overnight except weave!

3. Olive Oil-This to me is the basic oil of all oils. Olive oil is just good for your hair. You use it alone or you can add other oils to it to create a fantastic mixture for your hair. If you don't know about this oil, ask! :-)

2. Coconut Oil-Okay, so I am sure most people thought this oil would be number one. Maybe it should be, but I have to be honest...I don't use Coconut Oil...at least not yet. I guess I have avoided it because of memories of my mom using it on my hair when I was young and I hated the smell. However, I can not ignore the fact that a lot of people use this oil on their hair. And for good reason. Coconut oil is said to be a better conditioner than any synthetic one you can buy. It restores the protein in your hair so that makes it strong. It prevents hair loss and retains moisture. Its a good oil.

1. Sesame Oil-What? Yes, I feel this oil is number one. Why? Well, when I researched the benefits of this oil, it had me like...yes. First off, it is an anti-bacterial, anti-viral AND anti-inflammatory. I have used this oil and its a very light oil with a mild fragrance. I infused it with fresh ginger to make an amazing scalp treatment that left my scalp feeling fresh and clean. This was before I knew all its benefits. Now I know why it felt so good...its detox for the scalp!

A word of caution...not all oils are meant to be mixed. Please be careful when using any oil on your hair or skin. Some oils when mixed can change in form and become caustic, causing skin irritation.
